Smith's Green-Eyed Gecko
Photograph by Anke Seidlitz

"Staying in Asia for many years has given me the opportunity to get close to wildlife on many occasions. This female Smith's green-eyed gecko chose to live on one of the chalets next to my home, taking advantage of the insects attracted by the lights at night."

~I love this picture!
~It is not how people would usually photograph a gecko; usually people would get the whole animal, not just its eye
~I love the colors and the textures; the color of the eye is fantastic and goes very well with the blue background, and the texture of the gecko's skin is so sharp and interesting

Child and Water Buffalo, Vietnam
Photograph by Denis Rozan
A young Hmong girl rides a water buffalo in Sa Pa, Vietnam

~I love this "portrait" because the water buffalo is the one looking at the camera, and the girl is not
~They are both the subject of the photo' the water buffalo is staring at the photographer, and the girl is so intent on what she is holding, she seems to not even notice the camera

David Gibson, London 2011

~ I love that most of this photo is the reflection in the puddle
~ I also love that you wouldn't even know that building was there if it wasn't reflected in the water, it's so cool that you can't see it behind the people but you can see it's reflection

Theme: Seeing the Light

"67/366 Batman"
"Not much inspiration tonight so a quick lego shot
lighting; 430ex  16th power with grid above camera. triggered by camera ir"

~ I love the effect that this photo has
~ You can tell the light source is directly overhead but the subject isn't in the light at all
~ All you can see is a faint silhouette of the lego from the light reflecting from behind

"Ocean Air Bubble"
Photograph by Mark Tipple
"An air bubble ascending from the ocean floor contorts and twists into a semicircle as a wave breaks in the background. Captured as part of the Underwater Project."
~I love this picture, it is so creative and unique
~The lighting really adds to it, i think without the sun shining through the surface, the photo would seem like it'd be missing something
~The top of the photo is so light on comparison with the bottom corners, provides nice contrast and moves your eye around the photo
~The sunlight illuminates the top of the air bubble and lights up the water behind it, so everything is light and gradually fades to dark around the edges

Photograph by Robinson McClellan
"Celebrating a 'Manhattan Solstice'—when Manhattan's street grid lines up with the setting sun—in front of the American Museum of Natural History. On this day, New York City's vast edifice becomes "Manhattanhenge‚" dedicated to sun worship!"
~I love the way the sun is shining in this photo
~It is directly in the center, so it is the first thing the viewers sees and looks at
~The sunlight gives a red glow to everything else in the picture
~It looks like the light is reflecting off the camera lens, which is causing the red glow; it is the main focus of the photo besides the sun itself
~It overlays the people in the photo, they become clear once the viewers really looks at the picture and notices what is going on

Theme: Composition

"Zebra, Tanzania"
Photograph by Giedo van der Zwan

"We were taking shots in the southwest of Serengeti, Tanzania. This location is known as Hidden Valley and was full of animals from the great migration. This pregnant zebra came out of the dust for a second to take a look at me. She was the perfect poser! Head straight, ears up, legs in line, tail accentuating her curving body while the herd in the background created the perfect stage of dust!"

~I love the composition of the photo
~the pregnant zebra in the front really stands out against the dust and the other zebras behind her
~you can see the zebras around her, almost framing her body, but they are so faint and covered by the dust she is really the only one you notice

"Volcano Puyehue"

by Claudio Santana
Award of Excellence
"A cloud of ash billowing from Puyehue volcano near Osorno in southern Chile, 870 km south of Santiago, on June 5, 2011. Puyehue erupted for the first time in half a century on June 4, 2011, prompting evacuations for 3,500 people as it sent a cloud of ash that reached Argentina."

~I love the colors in this photo
~The texture of the ash as it rises into the sky is so interesting
~The gray ash vs red ash vs the blue sky is nice contrast and it keeps your eye moving around the photo
~The colors make the photo look very powerful, like no one can control what is happening

Theme: Focus

"The Rower"

Photograph by Phil Uhl

The majority of this picture is in focus, it's just the water behind the boat that is out of focus.  It caught my eye because the photo is mostly blue because of the water, but when you look closely, half of the water is sharp and in focus, and the other half os soft and blurry.  The woman and the boat are the main subject of the photograph, and the contrast of the ocean (focused vs blurry) helps add to the composition.

"Winter Wonderland"

My sister took this picture December 2009 in the courtyard behind our dorm building.  I love how the main subject of the photo is the berries and they are very sharp and in focus, and everything else (the majority of the picture) is out of focus.  I think photographs like this are so interesting and unique.
